The Chinese have many more freedoms than a generation ago, but the government still controls and punishes its people.
Many human rights activists argue that the Chinese government is cruel, abusive, and harsh to its citizens. The Chinese government has done many things over the last generation to help its citizens.

The Chinese government is an authoritarian country that is strict and cracks down on its people who do not agree with them. People's lives in China, 35 years ago, were decided for them by their government. Jobs, houses, and spouses were picked by Communist Leaders. If these people obeyed, they received a free education, health care, and housing.

There are still many restrictions in China. A quote from the video below, "That is because the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is making laws that boost its 'stability maintenance' rather than to protect civil rights" (2:25).
